FOI release

Number of chlorine gas/chemical incidents in leisure facilities since 2020

Case reference FOI2026/00659

Received 8 June 2026

Published 8 July 2026

Request

The number of chlorine/chemical incidents attended in leisure facilities: Clarified as:

1. ‘Chlorine incident’ - most incidents will normally have a chemical mix creating chlorine gas, but if chemical mix incidents makes it easier for you to get the information

2. 2020 to date please.

3. Public leisure facilities and privately run spa facilities please.

Response

Our Data and Improvement team searched for incidents attended in leisure facilities like leisure centres, sports venues, swimming pools, gyms, and other similar settings.

They let me know that there have been seven special service (non-fire) hazardous materials incidents, attended since 2020, where the special service incident sub type is recorded as “combination of substances”.

It is my understanding that LFB do not record if the premises are public leisure facilities, or privately run spa facilities, while attending a special service incident.
