Last year you supplied me with a response to the following question [Your Ref: FOI2025/00666]. Please could you update the answers to these three questions.

1. How many fire service employees have been diagnosed by your occupational health service, or other such body, as suffering from PTSD as a result of their work connected with the fire at Grenfell Tower? How many of these were (a) firefighters and (b) control/telephone/999 staff.

2. How many days off work have (i) firefighters, and (ii) control/telephone/999 staff, taken as a result of mental health issues which have been attributed to their work in and around the fire at Grenfell?

3. How many (i) firefighters and (ii) control/telephone/999 staff have been retired on ill-health grounds as a result of mental health issues associated with their work in and around Grenfell?

Response

Our Data and Improvement team have provided the information below:

1. How many fire service employees have been diagnosed by your occupational health service, or other such body, as suffering from PTSD as a result of their work connected with the fire at Grenfell Tower? How many of these were (a) firefighters and (b) control/telephone/999 staff.

This is based on number of staff who: 

  • Since 14 June 2017, have had (i) at least one sickness case categorised “Stress, Anxiety or Depression”, with the subcategory recorded as either as “PTSD” or “Adverse Trauma Response”, or (ii) have had a Due to Service sickness absence that has been acknowledged by panel as PTSD.

  • Excludes any sickness cases for which the cause of sickness is recorded as “non-work related”.

  • There is either (i) specific mention of Grenfell in the Individual Contact Record notes; or (ii) have a due to service case been acknowledged as having a mental health condition caused by Grenfell.

How many days off work have (i) firefighters, and (ii) control/telephone/999 staff, taken as a result of mental health issues which have been attributed to their work in and around the fire at Grenfell?

(i) 8218

This based on sickness cases where: 

  • Sickness has commenced since 14 June 2017, and has been categorised as “Stress, Anxiety or Depression”.

  • Excludes any sickness cases for which the cause of sickness is recorded as “non-work related”.

  • There is either (i) specific mention of Grenfell in the Individual Contact Record notes; or (ii) have a due to service case been acknowledged as having a mental health condition caused by Grenfell.

  • The figures above represent the total lost working days for each occupational group.

3. How many (i) firefighters and (ii) control/telephone/999 staff have been retired on ill-health grounds as a result of mental health issues associated with their work in and around Grenfell?
